It seems I can't turn around without hearing about cancer lately.
Item: One dear friend has suddenly found herself very knowledgeable about non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (b-cell, large diffuse type), since her husband went from complaining of not feeling well last week to starting chemo this Friday. I told her I'm not the praying sort, but I'll do my best.
Item: A woman I know from school and temple told me today that she tested positive for carrying the BRCA gene, so she opted to have her ovaries removed in January and will have her breasts removed next week. Yes, prophylactically, since her risk of ovarian or breast cancer is increased by something like 80% because of the presence of this gene. Can. You. Even. Imagine.
Item: A guy I went to college with is now working to raise funds for cancer research and awareness (particularly lung cancer). His sister-in-law, a non-smoker, died of lung cancer. From his site:
Did you know this? I didn't.
Who can know what they'd do with a cancer diagnosis (of themselves, or of a family member)? I sure don't.
