Today was Julie's end-of-year class picnic, graciously hosted by one of her classmates. The kids walked over from school for fun in the sprinkler, chalk drawing on the driveway, pizza and cake, and all that other good stuff. I delivered a big bowl of watermelon and then hung around for a while, enjoying what is forecast to be the last sunny day in a good long time.
I left before it was over, because I had to head to Petco for cat food and run other glamorous errands like that. Shortly after I left, the host family's next-door neighbor came out on his balcony and noticed the party going on:
So he came by with autographed photos for all the kids. Yeah, Jason Varitek. Damn.

Doh!

How does this keep happening to you????

You seem to have good luck with a number of things, but sadly two of those things aren't Jason Varitek and large household appliances. :-(
Julie got a cool souvenir, though!

I saw him on his deck, and then I left. I missed him too! The kids were soooo cool and were telling him that he "ruled." I resisted the urge to join in.

I think Varitek was on his deck checking whether you were still there before he came over! =D

Hey, my daughter had a friend in middle school that lived next door to Tek. She would go over and stalk his house but he was rarely home.
I once had lunch at the booth next to Youk at Johnnies but was too awestruck to ask for an autograph. Yes, I AM a moron!

I live next door to a Red Sox player but won't ask for his autograph because he is in the sanctity of his home. Plus, he's a relatively quiet guy. If he offers though...different story.

I'm not interested in autographs in general. I treasure more the little conversations and interactions. When Tek first moved into the neighborhood, I chatted with him at the deli while we awaited our sandwich orders. Who needs a signature?
I really admire Tek because he recognizes that when he's out and about, people (especially kids) are going to be interested in him. He probably wishes he could be left alone now and again, but he realizes that it's part of the deal. In the case of yesterday's party, he volunteered himself! He shouted down from his balcony, "How many kids are there?" and then showed up with the autographed photos. Whattaguy!
