Today's grammar lesson: A gerund is an -ing verb that functions as a noun. So, in the sentence "I like cooking," cooking is a gerund. Wake up! This is leading somewhere:
Today I decided that I would either make a list of movies I've seen whose titles begin with gerunds or get a life. No, really, what happened was that I noticed that two of my upcoming movies from Netflix are "Owning Mahowny" and "Changing Lanes" (both gerunds). That got me thinking, as I am wont to do. So here's the list:
"Being John Malkovich"
"Breaking Away"
"Breaking the Waves"
"Chasing Amy"
"Coming Home"
"Driving Miss Daisy"
"Eating Raoul"
"Finding Nemo"
"Raising Arizona"
"Saving Private Ryan"
"Singin' in the Rain"
"Waiting for Guffman"
"Waking Ned Devine"
"Walking Tall"
If you're still awake and haven't un-bookmarked me yet, let me know if you think of any others. Beware of -ing verbs that are functioning as adjectives; these are really present participles, as in "Working Girl" and "Sliding Doors." Now I'm going to run away quickly before someone smacks me.
P.S. No, I'm not going to provide links for all those movie titles. See, some things are even too boring for me!
