Julie woke up cross-eyed today. Well, that's a little bit of an exaggeration—she started going cross-eyed last week. The right eye seemed to be turning in, or was it the left? Then this morning I saw her try to grab a toy and miss three times! I thought I was going to pass out. Laura saw her do it two more times during the morning. So I brought her to the pediatrician's office, and she said it looked like just the right one was lazy, although the left one might act up when she's tired or something. I assured her that she wasn't having any trouble navigating the stairs, jumping in puddles, eating with a fork, playing, etc., and I had to show her off by picking up a book called TUESDAY and asking, "What letters do you see, honey?" just so she could point to them one by one and say, "T! U! E! S! D! A! Y!" thereby showing the doctor that she can see (read: that she is extraordinarily smart). So I made an appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist; the earliest I could get was May 20, so I'm hoping for a cancellation. I don't know which would be worse: buying little tiny 2.5-year-old-sized glasses or making her wear a patch. And don't get me started on imagining eye surgery already. The poor little kid! She just looks wrong.
The patch is more likely, isn't it?

I had lazy eye. Had to wear an eye-patch AND glasses. My parents tell me that I was extraordinarily compliant about wearing the patch (which was of the adhesive flesh-colored variety and caused teasing about being a cyclops.) I think I'd have prefered a black pirate patch. Anyway it worked. I'm not blind in my right eye. I can parallel park and drive on highways even though I suspect my depth perception is not what a normal person's would be (but who knows? I can't see what you see). And I'm getting my first pair of contacts in a few weeks!
Anyway, the pediatric ophthalmologist will have all the answers. And there are lots of cool machines to look into. Just prepare for screams when they put in the dilating eye drops.
