Sad Sunflowers

Trader Joe's had these amazing fiery sunflowers that were kind of reddish-orange and just magnificent. I figured that they just added red food coloring to the water of regular yellow sunflowers, and in fact the water in the vase was suspiciously pink at the end of the day! But boy, these guys sure didn't hold up well. They're hanging their heads like they're admitting total defeat. I don't think I'll buy them again, too depressing.

You can get sunflowers in all kinds of shades of red, orange and yellow:

We tried the 'Moulin Rouge' variety one year but the slugs ate them before they had a chance to establish properly.
