Well, this is a strange one (for me, anyhow):
Ten Favorite Baby NamesI guess the Ten on Tuesday site owner doesn't have kids yet. Well, here goes, not in order of preference:
1. Stephanie
2. Martha, the runner-up for Stephanie—even while I was in labor! Then when she came out, she just "looked like a Stephanie." What can I say?
3. Peter, the only boy's name Andy and I ever agreed on. If we'd had another son, we would've ended up with a name that one of us actively disliked or that had bad associations.
4. Julie
5. Jamie, the runner-up for Julie. I finally decided that I didn't want a name that was even remotely ambiguous, sex-wise. She does look like a Jamie to me, though. . . .
6. Nina
7. Natalie—Andy nixed it for Julie, said it was too similar rhythmically to Stephanie.
8. Julian
9. Henry
10. Benjamin
My husband and I could never agree on a boy's name, so it was fortunate we had two girls. He named the first because he thought the name Ashley was so unusual. (haha--he had never heard it, but many other people had)I picked the middle Marie. Our second daughter was named after a couple of students I really liked named Alison and we both love the name Catherine--but were afraid she'd be Cathy if we used it for her first name. I still think Catherine Alison sounds better than Alison Catherine. Oh,well...If we'd had boys, Jared Matthew and Adam Christopher were the names we were "discussing", sometimes in very loud voices!

It simply befuddled me that MEN would have say over babies' names. Growing up, I'd make lists of names and daily I'd say to my mom, "When I grow up and have a baby girl, I'm going to name her blah blah." Little did I know what I was in for! It's not the mom's exclusive right to name her baby? WTF? I never anticipated the dad having an opinion (or a right!) So, that was an eye-opener for me, but of COURSE they have the right to an opinion about it. (Grrr). Nathan is my favorite boys' name (I got my way on that one). If he'd been a girl, I wanted to name her Bree, after the town in Lord of the Rings. Dad wasn't jazzed about that one, so it's a good thing we had a boy.
