The January 17 issue of The New Yorker has a terrific article by Margaret Talbot about Hayao Miyazaki, animator and director of "My Neighbor Totoro," among other wonderful movies. The article isn't available online, but this interview with Talbot is. It hits on almost everything in the print article.
Thanks! I have still only seen Princess Mononoke, Kiki and Spirited Away. I should rent a couple more of his films.
