I rarely use the headphones for my iPod; if I'm at my computer I just listen to iTunes, and in the car I listen to the iPod through my car stereo, via the iTrip dohickey that Andy got me with the iPod. It generally works fine. (Note to Boston-area iTrippers: 89.3 is pretty much the closest you'll get to an "empty" FM signal—although for some reason my iTrip can't seem to keep 89.3 as its default and I have to reset it every time I get in the car. Annoying.) However, sometimes on a long trip, when we're going in and out of signal ranges, we have to keep switching the iTrip station around, which is a pain. So, here's my question: I've seen some mini stereo speakers with a little iPod dock between 'em; they all seem to use an AC power supply, as they're meant to be used in a house. But I'm wondering if there's one that can use the car's cigarette lighter instead. That's how I power my iPod in the car all the time anyhow.
I've been looking at those, too, wondering if I could use it as a replacement for a clock-radio-alarm-thing by my bedside. In the car I have a cd player/fm receiver that also has a stereo mini-jack on the front. I just plug the iPod in via the headphone jack. After-market car stereos that have the jack on them are not uncommon. You could, for a couple of hundred bucks, replace the whole deck and get one with the jack on it. Or you could have someone install a jack from the wires under the dash. Just a thought.
