I don't know how or why, but somehow I forgot all about one of my favorite bands in college, the (English) Beat. Nina reminded me with her iPod lyrics game. So I promptly went to Limewire and downloaded as much as I could (I'm with Scott here: I see no ethical problem with downloading music I already own in another format. If I own it on vinyl or cassette, I'm downloading the digital version for free.) Anyhow, I've been reliving some happy-go-lucky youthful times with "Doors of My Heart," "Tears of a Clown," "Twist and Crawl," etc. I have vague, happy memories of my twentieth birthday, seeing the Beat at a Hartford club (the Agora Ballroom, perhaps?). I also downloaded some Specials stuff; remember "A Message to You, Rudy"? Ahh, those were the days.
Those were the days, indeed! I loved the Specials. And Madness (I went to every Madness concert they held in Oslo), I even dressed the ska part. Ahh ... thank for bringing the memories back, Karen!

I gave Nina a ride to work this morning, and she told me you'd written about the Beat. I saw them in Providence in the early '80s; I have vivid memories of jumping up and down (one could hardly call it dancing) to "Mirror in the Bathroom" with my then boyfriend, now my husband. Hmmm... Valentine's Day is coming right up. I'm getting ideas. Thanks!
