I haven't been able to stop grinning all day. Julie had a terrific birthday (raw, rainy weather notwithstanding). It's such a joy to watch the totally innocent, pure delight of a little kid—or this little kid, at any rate! A single balloon can still make her happy! She got wonderful presents—and just the right number, too, because we've learned that "less is more" when it comes to kids and presents. Her big present from us was the new Playmobil Unicorn Fantasy Land:
She had cupcakes with her pals at school:
"Are you 1? Are you 2? Are you 3? Are you 4?"
and cake and ice cream at home:
"Make a wish!"
(Yes, that's a Disney Princesses cake. Yes, I know. Just forget it, OK?)
She had visits and phone calls and cards from relatives. She had a happy, happy birthday.
Awwwww, happy birthday, pretty girl!

That picture of you and your daughter is terrific. It's one of those mystic things that ONLY happens to mothers.
Sometimes, they look at their children, and they become radiantly beautiful.
No matter how much Dads love their kids, the best they can manage is a goofy grin.

What a nice thing to notice -- and mention. :-)
There's a photo somewhere of me holding Stephanie (my oldest) after 55 hours of labor. I look like a celestial being, hospital gown and all.
