Last night we went to a lovely housewarming party at Kathleen and Atul's. I love meeting people at a party and finding out how we're all connected to our hosts. And as soon as possible, I intend to get you the recipes for Kathleen's amazing cheese wafers and her pesto dip (which I threatened to pour into a sippy cup and just drink all night). Delish.
I'd always thought that it was a Jewish tradition to present new homeowners with bread, salt, and wine, but a little Googling revealed that it's nearly universal. Indeed, in "It's a Wonderful Life," George and Mary Bailey give the Martini family bread, salt, and wine when they buy their first house, saying:
Bread - that this house may never know hunger.
Salt - that life may always have flavor.
Wine - that joy and prosperity may reign forever.
So that's what I did.
I love to give those things as a housewarming, too. I go with "wine- that life will always be sweet".
