Between Pete's field trip and our family outing on Sunday, we have apples up the wazoo. Andy rarely needs encouragement to bake a pie, so yesterday he made this Apple Pie with Oatmeal-Pecan Topping from an ancient Bon Appétit (so ancient that the recipe isn't even on Epicurious, and I'm too tired to type the whole thing out). The topping makes it taste sort of like an apple crisp. Delicious warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. (Note that the half-burnt, half-missing crust perimeter is my fault. I was the one in charge of putting foil around the edges after 20 minutes in the oven, and I did a lousy job.)
I forgot to mention that on Saturday he made a ricotta pie. It turned out lighter and fluffier than he'd hoped—he likes it very thick and creamy. It's not my favorite type of dessert anyhow.
Mmmm...now I'm hungry!!

What a fantastic looking pie! I'll bring you folks some proper frozen custard to have with it if you save me a piece!

Funny thing--my husband is the pie baker in the family too. Think it's a guy thing, like barbecue?
