I don't understand why people feel the need to append the "pre-" prefix to so many words. What's the difference between a prestamped envelope and a stamped enveloped? Is prewashed spinach cleaner than just plain old washed spinach? What the heck is the idea behind preregistering for a class and then prepaying for it? This annoys me every time I read a recipe: Why on earth do we preheat the oven? Aren't we just heating it?
I also can't figure out the whole "de-" deal. When we peel an orange, we remove the peel. We don't need to depeel it. Similarly, when we core an apple, we remove the core. We don't need to decore it. It works for pitting olives and shelling walnuts, too (no need for depitting or deshelling). So why, then, do we devein shrimp instead of just veining it? And I've seen both bone and debone in reference to removing bones from chicken. While we're on the subject, a peeled orange has no peel and a cored apple has no core, but what about seeded grapes? Seeded grapes have seeds (as opposed to seedless). Maddening.
