the apples appeal to people who are disgusted by the thought of repeatedly biting into something.

Kids' weird eating habits are the most ordinary thing, but I remain vaguely worried about this level of fussiness among grownups. Our lives are already so sterilized and pre-packaged. Anyone who can't just pick imperfect fruit off a backyard tree and eat it with gusto and a dripping chin needs to relax more.

I can see Scott's point. It's a symptom of our urbanization, all right. Still, neat way to send apples to school with the kid.

If I pack apple for my kid, I slice it into bite-sized pieces and sprinkle a little sugar and cinnamon on top. It keeps the pieces from yellowing but, of course, the down side is the added sugar.

According to this article, there are some people for whom the "disgust factor" is just more pronounced. I know that Stephanie bums out if she bites into a chicken wing and then looks at where she just bit.
