Sheila shared with me her middle-school daughter's assignment:
Extra Credit Opportunity!
Making Cookies Lab Report
1. Bake a batch of your own cookies - experiment as you wish
2. Write up a lab report to accompany the cookies, including:
Problem/Question: your purpose or investigation
Hypothesis: what you think/predict will happen
Materials: list exact quantities and type of material (please avoid using any type of nut)
Procedures: List the steps you took to mix and bake (like a recipe)
3. Bring the cookies into class, so that we can "experiment" on them in school - we'll practice our observational skills, as well as how to analyze and form conclusions.
and how it turned out:
She made chocolate chip cookies (traditional Toll House recipe), adding extra chips and extra baking soda, believing that the latter would make them rise more. They did not, but they came out a wonderful golden brown. This reminded me of your bit about the alkaline qualities of baking soda in your recipe for one-pot chocolate chip cookies, so I printed it out for her to read. She brought it in and it's now on the science news bulletin board in her science classroom! Verbatim—educating the youth of America!
Hey, I do what I can.
