Well, I talked the talk, but I couldn't bring myself to walk the walk. I sat down with the June 19 New Yorker that day and then immediately closed it. I waited another couple of weeks and called again. I explained my predicament, and this time the woman on the other end of the line said, "I see that we have twice ordered you a copy from a warehouse, and I'm sorry neither one arrived. As soon as we hang up, I am going to march into our storage room here and get a copy of the June 12 issue and put it into an envelope myself to mail to you." And she did! It arrived today! And I didn't even realize that the missing issue was the special summer fiction issue. Also in today's mail was the Sept. 11 issue, so . . . lots of reading to catch up on. You do the math.
Dear Andy:
I'm sorry to hear about Karen's deteriorating condition. Who knew that failure to receive an issue of her beloved New Yorker would eventually lead her to this delusional state? (On the other hand, if mewling piteously over the Community Shopper coupon booklet comforts her, perhaps we should let it go.)
Here's hoping they send a genuine replacement of the missing issue soon.
Be strong.
Scott
