1. One Man Guy - Rufus Wainwright
This song makes me feel a little bad for Loudon, Rufus's dad, because he wrote the song, and he definitely has misogynistic "issues," but now his very out son is singing this song in a wholly different way. Which is not to say it's a bad thing, but I have to believe that it was a hard thing for ol' Loudo to hear.
2. Mad About You - Sting
Sting? So smart. So literate. Ahh.
3. Oh Cumberland - The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, featuring Maraca Berg & Emmylou Harris
I'd listen to Emmy read me her shopping list. 'Nuff said.
4. From a Whisper to a Scream - Elvis Costello & Glenn Tilbrook
God, but I love this song. I was singing it loudly in the car the other day. Steph said, hoping against hope, "Mom, are you singing?" "Yes!" (me, back to singing; Steph, commencing to eye-rolling)
5. Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours - Stevie Wonder
Need I say anything at all? No, I didn't think so.
6. Beyond Belief - Elvis Costello
"I've got a feeling
I'm going to get a lot of grief
Once this seemed so appealing
Now I am beyond belief."
7. Basin Street Blues - Harry Connick, Jr.
I know people consider Harry too "lite," but I think there's a place for this kind of jazzy piano (no, I know it's not real jazz) and vocals, and I enjoy it. So there.
8. Jimmy Jazz - The Clash
I've been singing "Sattamassagana for Jimmy Dread" for 25 years and still have no idea what it means. People?
9. Stranded - Shawn Colvin
Full disclosure: I planned to just skip over this, because I have nothing to say about it, and then another song ("Ricochet in Time") from the same CD came up! It would not be denied! I like this CD, I like Shawn Colvin, this just doesn't happen to be my one of my favorite tracks.
10. Once in a Very Blue Moon - Chris Smither
I have all Chris Smither's CDs, and this is one song I particularly enjoy. I'm due to post a review of his latest, which I bought a few weeks ago.
That Sting track makes me think about how super-dramatic some of his stuff is and how sometimes I just want something less emotionally arduous. And I'm a long-time fan.
I was a huge Elvis fan when I was about 16. I should look into getting a greatest hits or something because I don't have any of it around anymore.
All I know of Harry Connick, Jr. is a couple of his covers "It had to be you," etc. But what I've heard is a-ok by me.

"You know she has no sins
for all your jealousies...
in a sense, she still smiles very sweetly..."
Elvis is king.

Random bit o' trivia - Stevie Wonder wrote "Signed, Sealed Delivered I'm Yours" when his mother, Lula Mae Hardaway, came up with the hook. Why do I know THAT?
