Hie thee to the nearest Sur La Table store for free knife-sharpening on three knives (the rest are $1/inch, so you'll obviously want to get your carving knives done for free and then pay for the parers etc.). Normally it takes 24–48 hours, but if you ask nicely enough, you might even get seven of your best knives done while you wait! But that's not all! If you received a $10 SLT discount coupon in the mail last month (and remembered to put it in your purse), you can get, say, a magazine and a new wooden spoon for free—there's no minimum purchase! Such a deal, but the knife-sharpening is good only for the month of October, and the coupon expires sometime in November, so get to it.
And if you haven't bought a tomato knife from SLT go right back and do it (with your coupon, I didn't get one). Under $10 and the best thing you will ever find to slice a tomato.

An excellent tip for a financially challenged, time-limited culinary student! As much as I love to spend quality time with my Japanese water stones, this is too good to pass up.
