Yesterday was Julie's birthday party—her first with friends. We did it at a local gym place that really has it down pat, particularly for the little ones. At this age, the people who run these parties really make or break it, and they have a terrific guy who manages to learn every kid's name, keep everyone safe and included and entertained, and get all the pizza and cake served before the whole thing's over.
In the past, I've always splurged on magnificently decorated bakery cakes. This time, however, I bought the $14.99 special at Costco and shoved three (new) Polly Pockets into the frosting. Julie couldn't have been happier, and you know what? It tasted pretty good. And you know what else? It's not easy to write on a cake, even with those little frosting gel squirters! I think it's pretty obvious who wrote "Happy Birthday" (the Costco people) and who wrote "Julie" and "5" (moi).
I also spent an entire afternoon assembling Polly Pocket goody bags cars:
A dozen squealing little girls had a ball, particularly our own little squealer.
