Julie's very interested in what "they" call prereading and prewriting activities these days; she frequently asks what signs and packages say and she loves to practice writing words (I dictate each letter to her). Today she was looking at something and asked, "Mom, does an upside-down i mean you're screaming?" I had to think for a moment until I realized what she was getting at.
Did you ever read Flowers For Algernon? There's a great diary entry where he discovers punctuation.

I read it 100 years ago -- and loved it -- but I don't recall any specific passages.
