Pete and Julie both decided that today would be the day they'd ride their bikes without training wheels!
Pete has been ready for well over a year but for some reason just hesitant to take that last leap of faith. He has excellent balance and coordination, so we kept telling him that he was a mere 20 minutes away from success, but he just wouldn't try. Turns out we were wrong: Today he gave it a shot and it was maybe 20 seconds before he was flying down the driveway, fast but in control. And just as I said, "The only tricky part now is to learn to start..." he started by himself without so much as a helpful hint. He's most definitely got it.
Not to be outdone, Julie hopped on her own bike and gave it a shot. She still has a little ways to go to do it all on her own, but she's definitely on her way.
Any guesses who's the only one in the family who doesn't have a bike? Oui, c'est moi. I've ridden exactly once as an adult, and that was on Nantucket while I was pregnant with Steph, back in '96. Eek.
The Glamore family never misses the Tour (on TV) and has recently gone up a size in bikes, bringing to 7 (SEVEN!!) the total number of bikes in the garage. We are a family of 5, of whom only the 4 males ride.
If they didn't do this in lieu of XboX and Game Cube or whatever, I'd say we're NUTS.
Actually, I know we are.
Congrats, and have a few bandaids ready!

Our bike store lets you trade up when you're buying a new bike, which ends up being a great deal as the kids grow.

A bittersweet day in cycling history: the Wise kids learn to ride, Mick Rogers abandons the Tour.
I hope your kids are now lifelong members of the No Emissions Vehicle crowd. :)
