All day long we've had bursts of bright sunshine interrupted by torrential downpours, complete with thunder and lightning. It's predicted to continue for the next couple of days, which is a major bummer for our out-of-town guests*, who arrive tonight from Michigan. They're planning on exploring Boston and then heading down to the Cape, so I'm hoping the weathermen are wrong again. (Although it always seems as though they're wrong in whatever way doesn't favor my plans.) Meanwhile, the humidity is just unbearable, so I'm praying we don't lose our electricity. I'm not generally a huge fan of air-conditioning, but on days like this, it's a necessity.
I'm thinking of Steph up at camp and remembering what it was like when I was a camper and the power went out in our cabins (yes, we had electricity—one bare bulb in the middle of the ceiling). We all shrieked in terror in delight and scrambled for our flashlights. (That's one good thing about losing your power at camp: You know you have a flashlight handy, as opposed to when you're at home....) I remember one summer when I was about 11 or 12, there were hurricane warnings, so they herded us all into the mess hall overnight. I wrote a very dramatic letter home on a paper napkin.
*These are business guests, which is not so much unusual for us as it is wholly unprecedented. We're having a brunch for them tomorrow, so I'm baking up a storm now and will have some recipes to share after they're gone.
It was good on Saturday closer to The Cape (out where we are) and the radar actually doesn't look too bad for Sunday either.
Of course, I could be wrong.
