Today I felt especially mommylicious: I sent Steph a care package! She had written home that she'd somehow lost her water bottle at camp, and although it's hardly a necessity, I decided to buy her a new one and send it up. Which meant I of course included some other goodies, like Care Bear stickers and neon gel pens and such. No candy though—it would be confiscated, and they're allowed to purchase two candies from the canteen each week, so it's unnecessary anyhow. Plus, if her counselors are even half as nice and cool as I was when I was a counselor, they'll be sneaking back with special treats late at night now and then. [Of course, I was occasionally known to go out and get loaded and bring back entire freaking pu-pu platters for my girls (when I had the oldest group, 15 years old), but that's another story.]
What Steph's letters lack in detail they make up for in tone: She sounds very happy and upbeat. So far we know only that she chose canoeing and arts & crafts for her electives, that she's managing to find enough food she likes at mealtimes, and that she had a splinter but her counselor got it out. It is most definitely the case that "no news is good news" when it's coming from sleepaway camp!
We all miss her, but the family dynamics around here are not drastically different without her. Pete and Julie definitely get along the best of any of the three possible pairs of kids, so there's been considerably less bickering and "Stop being so annoying!" this past week. Other than that, it's pretty much the same, surprisingly enough.
