I honestly would not have recognized Christian Bale in "The Machinist" if I didn't know he was in it. He lost a reported 63 lbs. for his role as an insomniac, anorexic, possibly insane machinist, and it was truly painful to look at him in some scenes. The movie was dark and troubling, but it did have a satisfying ending, unlike so many other dark, troubling movies. I can't exactly say I recommend this movie, but I'm not sorry I saw it. If you want to see an actor completely immerse himself in a role—and moreover, if you want to be able to count his ribs from the front or the back—then this is the movie for you. Creepy.
While I'm here, I'll just mention that I watched part of the first episode of "Entourage" and couldn't force myself to endure any more. The story wasn't even slightly interesting or compelling, and I didn't care about any of the characters. Andy watched the whole thing and is willing to give the second episode (on the same disc) a try. Not me.
