Thanksgiving has come and gone, and I am happy but absolutely wiped out. All the dishes are washed and put away, the leftovers are snug in their Tupperware containers in the fridge, and the kids are of course asking for dinner now since they ate almost nothing that was served this afternoon. (No comment!)
Both turkeys came out exceptionally good—I'm not sure why, because I did exactly what I always do! I quadrupled the stuffing recipe and still had almost none left over, so I'll make a note to quintuple it next year. The gravy was as good as ever; I still maintain that gravy is the most important component of the whole Thanksgiving feast because it enhances the good and rescues the mediocre. I made half of the roasted root veggies yesterday and the rest this morning, and that worked out well; I just reheated them all together. They were just as delicious as always, and that one do-ahead trick saved me some hectic oven-shuffling today—I'll definitely do that from now on.
Other people brought squash, pumpkin bread, cranberry relish, cranberry Jell-O mold, and rolls; I also steamed some haricots verts and just served them plain.
Obviously, we were all acutely aware that this was the first Thanksgiving without Gram, but no one got weepy about it. We mostly told funny stories about her and smiled at the memories.
