Answers to Naomi's questions:
1. What do you think of fruit leather?

I haven't had any in years, but I recall that it was pretty tasty. It's a little annoying that we're led to believe it's healthy (FRUIT!), when in fact it's really just a lot of sugar.

2. When did you last feel really distraught?

Back in January, when Andy thought he was having heart-attack-like symptoms. http://verbatim.blogs.com/verbatim/2008/01/happy-to-be-hom.html

3. Crossword puzzle or sudoku? Why?

Used to be crosswords, but now it's sudoku. I like the fact that you don't need to "know" anything to solve a sudoku -- it's just pure logic that anyone can come up with.

4. What did you think your adult life would be like when you were 12?

I don't recall, but probably something along the lines of what it is now -- happily married mom of 3!

5. What's your favorite book of all time?

Oy. Well, I gave my Top Ten here:
http://verbatim.blogs.com/verbatim/2007/04/my_top_ten.html
and I guess the one book that made the biggest impression on me and that I read the most times was The Catcher in the Rye.

6. How would you change the world if you could?

Make sure every person on the planet had access to clean drinking water, fresh food, adequate shelter, and medical care. Is that so much to ask?

7. Whom would you most like to invite for a potluck dinner?

One person? Probably Jon Stewart.

Karen

Answers to Leah's questions:
1. What do you think of Flight of the Conchords, Disc 2?

LOVED it! Just finished watching last night, and the "Footloose" take-off in the last episode was perfect.

2. When did you last bake?

Oh dear, it's been a while. I last made bread more than 2 weeks ago. That settles it, I'm making some today -- thanks for the nudge!

3. Hahlo or twhirl? Why?

Hahlo on my iPhone; Twhirl on my MacBookPro -- because Hahlo is made to work on the iPhone and Twhirl isn't.

4. What did you get on your SATs?

That's a good question, as I was just talking about this recently. In my day, if you decided to re-take the SATs, your new scores would override your old scores, even if they were lower! (Nowadays you can take the SATs as many times as you want, and only your highest scores will stand.) So I took them once and scored 720 in math (fine, as far as I was concerned) and 670 in English (which was surprisingly low). I wanted to take them again to improve my English score, but my guidance counselor wouldn't let me, because she was afraid I would do worse in math. So I stuck with the 1390 and always regretted it.

5. What’s your favorite everyday wine?

Hess Cab. I get it at Costco for something like $11.99.

6. How would you explain why it's Mother's Day not Mothers' Day?

I guess because everyone has only one mother, but it should indeed be Mothers' Day because we all celebrate all mothers on that day.

7. Whom would you most like to stop reading/hearing about in the news?

It pains me to say this, because once upon a time I had great hopes for her, but I'm done with Hillary. Done.

1. What do you think of Deval Patrick?
2. When did you last flip someone off in traffic?
3. Marinate or rub? Why?
4. What did you do for your senior prom?
5. What’s your favorite brunch place?
6. How would you feel if your children chose a life of poor grammar?
7. Whom would you most like to whack with a 2x4?

Karen

Answers to TwoBusy's questions:
1. What do you think of Deval Patrick?

I still like him and am still glad I voted for him, but I can't really say that he's done much to impress me lately.

2. When did you last flip someone off in traffic?

I don't flip people off, I shout "FUCK YOU, LOSER!" That happens pretty much daily, at least when I'm alone in the car.

3. Marinate or rub? Why?

I usually marinate, ostensibly so the flavor can really soak into the meat, but really I just don't have much experience with rubs. I do a rub on ribs: http://verbatim.blogs.com/verbatim/2004/04/grub_and_a_flic.html, but that's about it. I should experiment more with rubs, so thanks for the suggestion.

4. What did you do for your senior prom?

Wore a shiny dress and danced to Bob Seger, of course!

5. What’s your favorite brunch place?

Polly's Pancake Parlor up in Sugar Hill, NH. Although in truth, we go for breakfast or lunch, not exactly brunch. Brunch doesn't work so well with my kids because they need to eat something when they first get up and then aren't hungry enough for another meal before lunchtime.

6. How would you feel if your children chose a life of poor grammar?

As though there had been a mixup in the hospital, despite those little barcode anklets.

7. Whom would you most like to whack with a 2x4?

Whoever made Constant Contact so buggy and temperamental. We just started using it for our school newsletter, and I'm in hell.

1. What do you think of illegal immigrants attending state-funded universities? I don't really want to know the answer, I just want to plant it in your head so you can bring it up at a party when one of your friends has had a couple too many Malibu & Diet Cokes and see how much fun ensues!

2. When did you last play a musical instrument?

3. Brooks or Dunn? Why? Not even sure you like country music, but I still want to know!

4. What did you last summer? I know I'm supposed to know!

5. What’s your favorite root vegetable?

6. How would you feel if your daughter came home with her head shaved when she was 15?

7. [With] Whom would you most like to share a bottle of wine? People you actually know are not allowed. That's the only constraint.

Answers to Di's questions:
1. What do you think of illegal immigrants attending state-funded universities?

I have absolutely no idea. I assume you mean for free? Because I certainly have no problem with them paying for their education, illegal or not. But free? With our already strapped public education funds? Hm, I don't know. Clearly this is one of those issues that has many facets to it.

2. When did you last play a musical instrument?

The only instrument I ever played was the piano, and I haven't played in many years. You might recall that we got a piano last year: http://verbatim.blogs.com/verbatim/2007/03/ticklin_them_iv.html
I had hopes of sitting down and playing once in a while after it got tuned, but so far I haven't.

3. Brooks or Dunn?

No idea who or what those are!

4. What did you last summer?

What did I ... do? Not much. Kids went to camp. I worked a little. We went up to NH for a couple of short visits but didn't take a full-fledged vacation. This year we're going to the Cape for a week.

5. What’s your favorite root vegetable?

Carrots!

6. How would you feel if your daughter came home with her head shaved when she was 15?

Not all that pleased. But if my kids want to rebel by doing crazy things to their hair, I'm all for it. Shave it, grow it, spike it, color it, whatever! Just don't get a tattoo on your forehead.

7. [With] Whom would you most like to share a bottle of wine? People you actually know are not allowed.

You know I'm going to say Johnny Depp, don't you?

Karen

Answers to Florinda's questions:
1. What do you think of people who leave comments on your blog?

I'm grateful. For me, the whole point of blogging (rather than keeping a private journal) is to connect to other people. I love it when something I write causes people to respond.

2. When did you last plant a vegetable garden?

I've had only one vegetable garden ever. It was in the summer of either '94 or '95, and my friend Heather helped me get it started. I grew just a few herbs and veggies, and I really enjoyed it. I'd like to do it again, but I just can't seem to make it happen on my own.

3. Winter or summer? Why?

Definitely summer, because it's easier to find relief from the heat than from the cold. Also, the worst of the winter includes ice storms, losing power, scary driving conditions, etc., whereas the worst of the summer is just uncomfortable.

4. What did you feed your kids for dinner last night?

Pete had a game at 6:00, so the kids had grilled cheese sandwiches beforehand, and Andy and I had takeout faux Tex-Mex later, after they were in bed.

5. What’s your favorite complete waste of time?

Web-surfing, when I'm not really looking for anything, just following links aimlessly. I usually do find interesting things, but that's beside the point.

6. How would you react if your son wanted to have one ear pierced?

I don't think I'd mind. But not until he's a teen.

7. Whom would you most like to be stuck in a car with during a traffic jam?

Not Andy, because he gets too frustrated by traffic. Maybe my friend Pia, because we can chat for hours on end and never seem to have the time.

1. What do you think of organic pasta?

2. When did you last blow your nose?

3. Mexican or Thai? Why?

4. What did you eat for lunch?

6. How would you mend a broken heart?

7. Whom would you most like to strangle?

Answers to Amy's questions:
1. What do you think of Hillary Clinton's refusal to withdraw from the presidential race?

It makes me mad. She and Obama are spending a lot of time and money fighting each other instead of fighting McCain, and he just has to sit back and watch them pointing out each other's faults for him.

2. When did you last go a day without a computer?

It's been years. Really. At the very least, I blog and check my email every single day.

3. White rice or brown rice? Why?

I like both, but I make white rice more often, just because it's quicker.

4. What did you think of Jane Swift's state-funded helicopter ride to see her children when they were sick?

Disgraceful.

5. What’s your favorite way to relax?

Glass of wine and a book or a movie on DVD.

6. How would you prepare cauliflower so that your kids would eat it?

Roast it! I can't say they love it yet, but I think they will soon.
http://verbatim.blogs.com/verbatim/2006/03/oooh_the_colors.html

7. Whom would you most like to bring back to life?

I think we could use some Bobby Kennedy right about now.

Karen

Answers to Susan's questions:
1. What do you think of right before you go to sleep?

Everything I need to do the next day.

2. When did you last exercise ?

At the beginning of, um, last September. And how did you know I was going to post about that today?!
http://verbatim.blogs.com/verbatim/2008/05/was-that-you-i.html

3. Dark or Milk? Why?

Dark, all the way! I won't even eat milk chocolate if that's all that's available -- just don't like the taste.

4. What did you wear yesterday?

Who me? Jeans and a T-shirt, of course.

5. What’s your favorite thing to cook ?

Ooh, that's a tough one. Maybe chicken, because there are so many different things to do with it.

6. How would you change Andy ?

Yikes! I like him just the way he is. But you want me to say something, don't you? OK, I guess I wish he liked the same books I like so we could discuss them.

7. Whom would you most like to cook with?

Without a doubt, my hero, Jacques Pépin!

Karen

Answers to Lynn's questions:
1. What do you think of organic pasta?

I don't think I've tried it yet.

2. When did you last blow your nose?

This morning after my shower.

3. Mexican or Thai? Why?

Mexican. There are some flavors in Thai food that I aren't my favorites, like lemongrass. I like pretty much everything Mexican.

4. What did you eat for lunch?

Leftover pasta salad:
http://verbatim.blogs.com/verbatim/2008/05/another-mothers.html

5. What’s your favorite time of year?

Definitely the fall. The air is crisp and invigorating, the sky is bright, the kids go back to school...!

6. How would you mend a broken heart?

My own? Hm, I guess I would spend a good long time wallowing and then try to pull myself up out of it somehow.

7. Whom would you most like to strangle?

Bush, who thinks that giving up golf is going to make anyone feel better about the war.
