I have to thank Verbatim reader Wendy for turning me on to the music of Hayes Carll. His CD Trouble in Mind has been in frequent rotation in my iTunes library ever since I got it several months back. Carll's sense of humor shines through in his wry, ironic lyrics, and his twangy drawl is a pleasure to listen to. If you like Texas-style alt-country music, you'll love this CD.
I hope you're all familiar with the many free, legal downloads available at Largehearted Boy's site; he's got a whole load of live Hayes Carll tracks that are yours for the taking. I was delighted to come across Carll's version of one of my favorite old Bill Morrissey songs, "Morrissey Falls in Love at First Sight." As you might have suspected from the title, I wouldn't have thought this particular song would lend itself to being covered, but I was wrong—it's great.
Hayes also covers Morrissey's "Live Free of Die" in his first album.
