Tomorrow's the big day, when we drive up to camp to pick up Steph! This will be a big "double dip" for her, as she is eager to come home but will surely miss the fun of camp and all her pals. As in past summers, I'm sure she will be somewhat weepy tomorrow night, because it's such a big transition to leave a cabin full of girls and come home to your own bedroom. I remember that feeling very well—not really knowing where I belonged!
This evening I went out for drinks with a bunch of old camp friends; one was in town from LA to pick up her kids tomorrow too, so it was a perfect opportunity to get together. I almost didn't go because I was feeling exhausted and preoccupied, but I said to Andy, "I know I will regret it if I don't go," so I did. And I was right—it's just nice to see these people I knew so intimately so many years ago. Now we're all parents and involved in our own lives, but there's a bond that remains. I hope that Steph will go out for drinks with her friends 35 years from now on the night before they all pick up their kids from camp.
(For the record, we met at Bokx 109, which is the new bar/restaurant inside the Hotel Indigo. It has a very hip and funky atmosphere and menu, but try as I might, I can't seem to forget that it was until recently a Holiday Inn.)
I almost didn't go as well - too much going on at home - but I'm really glad I did - I had a great time. So good to get together!
