Today was the beginning of Julie's Week of Nothing, which we inaugurated with a viewing of "Up" at the West Newton Cinema (you know, the one with real butter on the popcorn!). Wow, what an amazing movie. I did not expect it to be so touching and sad that I would find myself bawling my eyes out for the whole first 20 minutes or so, and then again toward the end! I don't want to give anything away, but it tells such a gorgeous story of life-long love, and all I could think of was the song "This Is Us" by Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris, which is about an elderly couple reminiscing over a photo album. There's also a lot of fun and adventure and comedy, with talking dogs and crazy chases and unbelievable Pixar animation all the way through. I really recommend this movie, although it might be too much for some of the more sentimental kids out there. Julie loved it, although she did say it was very sad.
The preferred declaration of fondness in our house, now, is "I was hiding under your porch, because I love you VERY MUCH."
Loved loved loved that movie. (I cried, too!)

I was pleasantly suprised at "Up". My 7 year old son thought it was a little sad and my 4 1/2 year old kept asking when the movie was going to start for the first half since the dogs don't really show up until later on.

I confess that I also cried during the first few minutes of Up. I also loved Dug. I talk to and for my pets all the time, and the filmmakers totally nailed it. Just how I would have spoken for him.
