I can see it! It's a light, right there, at the end of the tunnel ... but I can't reach it today. Or tomorrow. Or the next day.
I am scrambling to finish up this copyediting project (which I can't wait to tell you about—soon, I promise!), and after that I have no other work in the pipeline! That would normally be a nerve-wracking realization, but honey, I am due for a vacation. I am sure that there will be plenty more work soon enough. Steph leaves for camp on Thursday, so I am also scrambling with all the last-minute list-making, shopping, and packing. This afternoon, in the midst of it all, Julie and Pete said glumly, "I don't suppose we can go to the pool?" My hard heart softened, and I took them over for a couple of hours, trying hard to relax a bit myself while I could.
Next week the only things on the calendar are Pete's long-awaited tooth-extraction appointment (let's see how he gets out of it this time!) and one day when I'll have to head into town to close Andy's books for June. I'll try to arrange playdates for Pete and Julie that day, or I will bring them along. Otherwise, we are going to just hang out! I'm looking forward to saying to Julie, "Yes, today I will play Crazy Eights with you! Yes, today I will learn a new piano duet with you!" And, as pathetic as it sounds, I am looking forward to cleaning the house. It is positively squalid. And that also means I'm finally going to get a new washer and dryer! Yay! And I'm going to cook dinner every night—and even try some new recipes! And read a book! And make a dent in the Leaning Tower of New Yorker magazines! And watch the Netflix movies that have been here since—gulp!—April!
Come with me into the light, won't you?
Welcome to the light! I finally emerged following my academic year and a much-deserved family vacation, only to descend next week with a substantive edit that should last until end of September. Yikes! I so enjoyed the freedom while it lasted—always short but sweet.
Bonne chance!
