Here's someone's list of the 25 Best Opening Lines in Western Literature. I posted this on Twitter and, not surprisingly, there were some disputes. Raych was dismayed to see Running with Scissors there—me too, because although I do like Augusten Burroughs, this opener is not that great (plus it's not a novel). TwoBusy was shocked that "A screaming comes across the sky" (Gravity's Rainbow) was not included; I heartily concur. What else would you have expected to see on this list?
