I haven't seen a movie in a while—and, if you can believe it, I still haven't watched one on my iPad! It should be taken away from me, I know it. But I did see a few movies a while back that I haven't reported on, so here goes:
1. I took the kids to see Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules when it first came out. I liked the original movie better than this sequel (I pretty much always do), although this was still very enjoyable, especially for a kids' movie. It was much better than nearly all of the non-Pixar animated stuff that comes out.
2. Speaking of which, we also saw another sequel, Kung Fu Panda 2 in 3D. You may recall that I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the first one; unfortunately, I thought this one was considerably inferior. The kids did not agree, and even Andy thought it was pretty good. I laughed exactly once. And the 3D was a complete waste, in my not-so-humble opinion.
3. On the plane home from London, I watched Secretariat, which Andy had watched on the plane to London while I pretended I'd be able to sleep. It's of course a terrific story, although because it's such a familiar one, there was no mystery about how it would end up. Would Secretariat really win the Triple Crown, setting still-standing records in two of the races? Um, yeah. But I knew nothing of the back story, and it was very interesting. Diane Lane is as lovely as ever; she still can't act her way out of a paper bag, but this role wasn't a terribly heavy lift. And John Malkovich was busy playing John Malkovich playing someone else, as usual. All in all, this was a perfectly good movie and made 2 of those 6 inflight hours go by pretty painlessly.
