Pete had been dying to see "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," so Andy and I went with him on Saturday (after dropping the girls at the Dreaded Mall, 'natch). The reviews were almost exclusively raves, and it was good, but it wasn't that good. I think the first one in this modern series, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," was a lot better, because the story was so fascinating and believable (my review of that one is here). This sequel pits ape against man, and guess what? There are good and bad apes just as there are good and bad men! Really! So, yeah, the story is very formulaic, but the CGI stuff is terrific, and I like Jason Clarke very much (though he's no James Franco).
I forgot to mention a couple of weeks ago that Julie was for some reason talking about old movies, and it came to light that she had never seen "Some Like It Hot," so of course we had to watch it. I've seen it a bazillion times and still find it hilarious. Julie had never seen Marilyn Monroe either, except in photos. If you are the only other person on the planet who's never seen it, you're in for a treat. Classic screwball comedy.
The modern sequel wasn't as good because many of my in-laws were in it... did you notice that a few of the monkeys were flying monkeys (they stand out from the apes)
