I will be very glad to put this year behind us—besides the country and world going to hell in a hand-basket, it has been a tough year Chez Verbatim. The latest "excitement" is that Andy woke up on Christmas Eve with a detached retina! He has had a number of retinal tears in the last couple of years (all repaired by laser), plus a vitreous hemorrhage 2 weeks ago, so this was not entirely out of the blue but still not expected. They tried a cryo procedure, but it didn't do the trick, so he had surgery on Friday. He's now required to lie flat for a solid week; we go back Friday to see if he can be up and around. And then if all goes well, he will be able to see again in a couple of months.
As I remarked to someone yesterday, I didn't realize that being married and raising a family would involve so many hospitals. But this is as good a time as any to mention how very grateful I am to live in Boston, where we have the world's greatest collection of doctors in every specialty. Even on Christmas Day, you'd be hard-pressed to find a "B Team" doctor at any of the many hospitals. I'm also grateful to have good health insurance—and grateful that we can afford to pay for it since we are both self-employed, and grateful that we can afford all the copays, deductibles, and noncovered expenses. It can really add up fast, as we saw this year.
In happier news, a couple of times a year we get the whole family (Andy's side) together when my niece visits from London. The last time was in June, and she's back now. Andy is of course unable to go out to dinner, so I stayed home with him, but we did manage to prop him up for a quick minute to get a photo beforehand:
I wish everyone good health in 2020—including 20/20 vision, because how could I resist that play on words?
I love the play on words, and am hoping for a healthier 2020 for your family!
